WINTER

Nordic Skiing   (cross-country)    Kachemak Nordic Ski Club  (907) 235-6018

Baycrest-Diamond Ridge
Twenty-five kilometers of groomed trails with terrain for any level skier. Flat muskegs, thick forests and rolling hills are available to both skaters and diagonal skiers. Beautiful views abound from this location of Kachemak Bay, Mt. Augustine, and Mt. Redoubt making this a photographer's paradise.

Peninsula Interior
Find solitude in the upper Anchor River valley area behind Bald Mountain and the McNeil Canyon trails. Here you're likely to see moose as you traverse the open spaces of the peninsula's interior.

Homestead Trail
This trail connects the Baycrest Trails to Diamond Ridge, Crossman Ridge and Ohlson Mountain Trails. This is a twenty kilometer stretch that combines the experience of scenic views, historic homesteads and remote valleys.

Ohlson Mountain
Ohlson Mountain is the site is the annual Tang Cup race and the Homer Invitational Race. At this location there is approximately 15 kilometers of hill country skiing. There is a warming hut that's open to the public on most weekends.

McNeil Canyon        McNeil Trail Association   (907) 235-6437
The McNeil Trail Association maintains a groomed five kilometer loop trail which is great for both skating and diagonal skiing. Access is via East End School and McNeil Canyon School.

Alpine Skiing  (downhill)      Kachemak Ski Club   (907) 235-5174

Located just above the Nordic Trails at Ohlson Mountain is the Alpine ski area with an 800 ft. rope tow. This is an ideal ski area for beginners and intermediate skiers but all skiers can definitely have great fun. Daily and season passes are available from the Kachemak Ski Club. Warming hut and outhouses available.

Telemark Skiing    (back country)

The southern Kenai Peninsula provides plenty of open space to keep the avid back country or telemarketer busy.  Some favorite locations are Bald Mountain, Lookout Mountain, Crossman Ridge, Caribou Lake, and the Boxcar Hills.

Local helicopter companies will provide transportation to glacier snowfields and mountain ridge skiing. Located in the Kenai Mountains across the bay from Homer, this provides some of the most exotic and unique ski experiences you will find anywhere.

Snowmobiling

Ohlson Mountain, bald Mountain, and the Boxcar Hills provide vast open terrain which is great for your next snowmobiling adventure! Access is via Ohlson Mountain Road and East End Road.

Dog Mushing

Skijoring behind Alaskan Huskies is an activity for those wanting to try something new and exciting. There are local mushers who are happy to provide lessons and guided trips.

Ice Skating

This activity takes place right in town and has been a favorite as far back as I can remember. A small ice rink is maintained near Ben Walter Park on Beluga Lake. In the years past while I was growing up, skating took place on Beluga Lake itself but now a great facility is provided which is much safer. Restroom facilities and a warming kiosk are available.

 Homer Winter Carnival

Weekend winter fun for the entire family including a Parade on Saturday. Contact 235-7740 for more information or to list your event.
